Asian longhorn beetle ALB is a highly destructive insect pest which poses a serious threat to a wide range of broadleaved trees outside of its natural range in China and neighbouring countries. Some of the trees which it can damage are forest and woodland species. Asian longhorn beetle is not known to be present in the United Kingdom, although one outbreak breeding population was found in Paddock Wood, Kent, England, in It was subject to rapid eradication action, and annual surveys since then have found no evidence of a continuing presence. There have also been occasional interceptions of individual beetles in the UK. A native of Asia, it has become established, and caused significant damage, in parts of North America since being accidentally introduced there in the s.

The Situation: An exotic long-horned beetle was first discovered attacking ornamental trees in New York City and Chicago. Detections of this pest have since been made in most states in the northeastern portion of the United States as well as in California beginning in Their route of entry into the USA appears to have been in untreated wooden packing crates originating in China. These beetles are large, conspicuous insects, readily recognized by their horns or antennae. Damage: Oviposition cavities chewed out by females are found in tree trunk bark and branch junctions, or on the trunk itself. As larvae mature, they enter the heartwood of the tree, destroying the quality of the wood, while feeding by large numbers of beetle larvae can kill trees by girdling them. Sap flows heavily from these large wounds and infested trees are prone to secondary attack by other diseases and insects.
Asian Longhorned Beetle (ALB)
Asian long-horned beetle ALHB is an invasive forest pest with no natural enemies in North America that attacks nearly all broadleaf trees, with native Maples being the preferred host. Adults lay their eggs in hardwood trees, and larvae then tunnel through the living tissue of the tree stopping the flow of water and nutrients, killing it. There have been very few sightings of ALHB in Ontario and it is important to be on the lookout for this dangerous invader. Several native non-harmful beetles can be easily confused with ALHB, so take a close look at how to identify this beetle listed below. Asian long-horned beetle is native to China and Korea where it is considered a major pest causing mortality of Elm, Maple, Poplar and Willow trees.
